CALIBRATION CHAIN VERSUS

STATIC WEIGHT CALIBRATION

  • A Calibration Chain is a single point calibration reference, that is it represents only one flow rate. With our static weights we do a 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% calibration. Linearity is a confirmation of scale accuracy and a quality installation.

  • The variation in belt tension under real load is not simulated by a calibration chain, making it little more than an expensive and cumbersome static weigh frame test.

  • Static weights are less expensive than roller chains. It is better to spend the money on a quality weigh frame since a roller chain does not improve the scale.

  • With a high deflection conveyor structure and high deflection weigh frame the roller chain would deflect the approach, retreat idlers as well as the weigh frame. This is the only additional benefit of the calibration chain vs static masses, namely it deflects the weigh frame and conveyor in a way similar to live material. A calibration chain would more simulate the system as it deflects under operating load. For an roller chain to be of benefit it must extend over the approach and retreat idlers.

  • The PSF4 weigh frames are very strong, resulting in minimal deflection. We have found static calibration to work very well and is much easier to apply the weights because they are stored under the weigh frame.

  • We have determined the affect and extent of any belt influence by checking calibration when belt is lifted and then in place. With our low deflection scale we have not found a difference in calibration.

  • Space is a consideration with a roller chain calibration system.

  • The accuracy of our system is the same for both methods of calibration.
